Kando ‘Beyond expectations’ IPEX Hall 5 Stand B10
Komori holds worldwide launch of next-generation B2 multi-colour press and new innovative B1 super perfector at IPEX

17th February 2006:  Leading offset and web press manufacturer Komori expands it sheet-fed offset range of with the worldwide launch of two significant presses at IPEX: The B2 Komori Lithrone LS29 Series of multi-colour presses and the B1 Komori Lithrone LS40SP Super Perfector.

Komori has adopted ‘Kando’, the Japanese term for ‘Beyond Expectations’, as its IPEX theme to reflect the broad range of press management and printing technology on show on its extensive 1500m2 booth (Hall 5 Stand B10).  The company will demonstrate more printing units on show than ever before, including multi-colour sheet and web perfecting presses producing a wide variety of value-added creative applications.
The new Lithrone LS29 Series has been developed in response to market trends for a sophisticated, highly automated multi-colour B2 press in both straight and perfecting configurations. Komori has taken ground-breaking technological innovations from its award-winning B1 Lithrone LS40 Series (launched four years ago) and incorporated them into the LS29 Series to deliver print quality unlike any other B2 press on the market.

With ultra-fast make ready the LS29 features the highest level of automation Komori has ever offered to the B2 market, including a completely new, fully-automatic, plate changing system as standard.

Two LS29 presses will be demonstrating added-value printing at IPEX: a five-colour LS529 with coater, utilising the fifth unit for machine sealing and the aqueous coater for gloss varnish; and the ten-colour LS1029P perfector demonstrating four-over-four work changing through a variety of stocks, including cover board, with sealing on the fifth and tenth units.

Key features of the B2 Lithrone LS29 Series include:

  • A new fully automatic plate changing system offered for the first time on a Komori B2 press
  • Changes four plates in 150 seconds enabling printers to handle even the shortest run lengths very competitively
  • 12,000 sph start up speed, reaching 16,000 sph production speed in seconds
  • High-speed, six minute changeover from one job to the next
  • Three double-size perfecting cylinders support sheet transfer at full speed on any stock and at full speed
  • Skeleton transfer cylinders provide maximum flexibility across a wide range of stock weights
  • New ecology features reduce consumption of energy and materials
  • Air guide sheet transfer reduces risk of marking and scuffing on any weight of sheet and at high ink coverage levels

Launched at the show, the Lithrone LS29 Series will be available worldwide from April.

World class perfecting productivity
Komori is a world leader in innovative perfecting systems that maximise speed, automation, flexibility and fast make-ready on its multi-unit B1/B2 Komori Lithrone perfecting presses. At IPEX the efficiency and added value print performance of perfecting comes under the spotlight in the Komori Perfecting Zones with the launch of new perfecting presses: the B2 Lithrone LS29P (see above) and the first S version of its double-deck Lithrone press, the B1 Lithrone LS40SP.

Outstanding productivity has always been the key feature of the double-deck Lithrone SP dedicated perfector, recognized as being up to three times as productive as a straight single-sided press. At IPEX, Komori adds advanced technology from its highly successful Lithrone S40 Series to create the new Lithrone LS 40SP. In this innovative system, Komori combines the exceptional print quality of sheet-fed presses with the productivity of web presses. In addition to its space-saving footprint, the new Lithrone S40SP improves production efficiently significantly and delivers major cost and waste reductions.

Key features of the B1 Lithrone S40SP Series:

  • Double stacked units produce a highly compact press
  • Five-minute fully automated plate changing across 10 units
  • Minimal gripper changes and air guided sheet path to maximise speed and quality
  • Identical plate imposition simplifies prepress preparation and increases production flexibility.
  • A unique delivery belt transport system matches press speed to deliver the sheets from last printing unit to delivery pile and so eliminate scuffing.
  • Print output levels take it close to web productivity.

Launched at the show, the Lithrone LS 40SP will be available worldwide after IPEX..

In addition to the new Lithrone 10-colour 540SP Super Perfector, The Komori IPEX Perfecting Zones also feature the popular 8-colour Lithrone LS 840P producing a wide range of highest quality perfecting featuring high ink coverage; and the 4-colour SPICA 429P. Designed primarily for new entrants to the quality B2 four colour market, where flexibility is a pre-requisite, the four colour/two-over-two SPICA is a price-conscious, easy to operate press, delivering hallmark Komori quality print. The B2 SPICA, which has taken the international market by storm since its launch at Drupa 04, features automation for plate-changing, cylinder cleaning and job pre-setting, with a small footprint and integrated main console over the delivery. This press includes the new Komori PDM Print Data Manager, launched at IPEX, for downloading ink profile and job ticketing information.

JDF-integrated workfow in action
To demonstrate its flexible open architecture, all six Komori sheet-fed presses at IPEX, from the ten-colour double-deck LS40SP to the four-colour entry level SPICA B2 perfector, are operating within fully JDF-enabled workflows and communicating with multiple third party suppliers to demonstrate the benefits of fully integrated print production from creation all the way to finishing.

At IPEX, the company integrates with more complementary suppliers than at any other event. The Komori DoNet zone features Hagen, Hiflex and Tharstern MIS systems operating bi-directional JDF-based press management via the Komori K-station. Also integrated into DoNet is Screen and Kodak prepress software, digital proofing, Komori K-Color-Profiling press calibration and Komori PDC-SII – the company’s new spectral densitometer.  Finishing partners integrated into the workflow on the Komori stand and throughout the show include Freidheim, Horizion and Muller Martini.

Live production jobs will be a key feature of the stand, including 10,000 copies of a magazine produced and printed daily on the new ten-colour Lithrone LS540SP double deck perfector launched at the show. Visitors can track all aspects of the production workflow, from creation and imposition, to processless platemaking, job management and finishing.

“IPEX heralds an important new phase for Komori with the launch of two new high-performance presses with the accent on perfecting, automation, productivity and workflow integration,” says Neil Sutton, Sales Director, Komori UK. “In today’s highly competitive market, printers are looking to streamline productivity, increase cost competitiveness, and enter new markets by offering a broader portfolio of innovative services. Consequently, presses need to be multi-featured, flexible and highly automated. Komori manufactures the most innovative and highly automated presses on the market with the lowest cost of ownership and the new presses we unveil at IPEX deliver even higher levels of flexibility and efficiency.”
